One of my early mentors told me that success is a marathon, it’s not a sprint. And, I’ve come to question that, because what I’ve observed is that really successful people have a series of sprints linked together. So, they have times of very, very high performance maybe with some rest or a break, and then periods of very high performance. Whether that be over a career, whether that be over the course of a week, whether that be over the course of a day.
And so, when we think about our success and how we’re going to transform our day into something that’s more productive and more profitable, I like to think in terms of sprints, right? So, if you think of a sprinter in track and field, right? We’ve got the sprinters in their blocks and the starting gun is about to go up. What’s the important time of that race? It’s the start. The one who gets the best start almost always is the one who wins.
So, I think it’s the same with business success. I think that having the best start is the best way to have the most success. So, when we look at it on a daily basis, what is the start of your day? What is your morning ritual? How do you prepare for your day so that you are focused, so that you’re confident, so that your mind is at ease, and that your body is ready to perform? So, what’s your morning ritual?
I can tell you mine. Mine is... I get up. I go to the gym. I go to the gym every morning. I either go to Cross Fit or I go and hop on my Peloton. I get exercise every single morning. When I’m done with that, I go to nutrition. That’s where I put the fuel in my body that’s going to carry me until lunchtime so that I don’t have any dips in energy, so that I don’t have any dips in focus, and that I can continue and cruise on, make my sprint all the way to lunch without having to stop, to slow down, or to get distracted with things. And, the last thing I do is I quiet my mind. So, I spend some time in meditation, so that when I’m finished with the meditation my mind is quiet, my stress level is very low, and my focus level is very, very high. So, that’s my morning ritual. I do it every single morning.
And so, what’s your ritual? Do you have one? Do you just show up at work and say, “okay, well yeah, I’m kind of feeling sluggish today, and I’m gonna grab a donut, I’m gonna have some coffee.”
Are we going to be able to have that great start to the day, so that you can sprint all the way to lunchtime with being very consistent in your effort, very consistent in your performance? Because consistency over the period of a day is so critical to having the most productive day you possibly can.
So, what’s your morning ritual? Do you have one? If you don’t, let’s start thinking about what one would look like. If you do have one, what are some things that you could do to improve it? Having that great start, that consistency of the day, will definitely lead to more productivity and more profitability and you’ll be glad you did.
