Where should a leader focus their attention?
As leaders, we tend to be good at setting goals, watching the numbers, and critiquing those we manage when the goals and numbers are not met. But, one of our most important roles is actually to provide inspiration and drive.
It’s your job to provide the “Why” and then allow your team to execute the “How” and “What”.
This means that simply setting goals and pushing teams to achieve those goals is not enough. This is the “What” part of our business. As leaders we provide the direction, education, and opportunity for our team to reach the goals we set. This is the “How” part of the business.
Ultimately, our job is to explain the “Why” of our business.
Why do we do what we do?
What drives us to wake up in the morning?
What propels us throughout the day?
What is the deep down desire to be the best we can be day in and day out?
What differentiates us from everyone else in our business?
As leaders, we’re responsible for answering these “Why” questions of our business and culture. Our role is to present a clear mission and set of values. This “Why” creates an environment that breeds success and attracts both customers and loyal employees.
With a strong “Why”, we can lead our team in the “How” and “What” to achieve our goals.
